Why there are only three chairs

Marcus cut hair in a kitchen for two years

Before Elm Street there was an apartment in Oak Cliff, a mirror propped on a bookshelf, and a folding chair that everybody complained about. Word got round anyway.

The shop was a print works

The ink stains are still in the floor by the second chair. We left them. The landlord offered to seal the boards and we said no, which he thought was strange.

Three chairs and no more

A fourth chair means hiring someone we do not know. Forty-five minutes a cut, nobody rushed out of the seat, and a wait on Saturdays that regulars have learned to plan around.
